Val Shawcross pushes for Clapham branch of the East London Line
Val Shawcross, London Assembly Member for Lambeth & Southwark, has welcomed the news that Transport for London is taking over the East London Line Extension project, but reiterated the need for a firm announcement about the future of the Clapham branch. Responsibility for the East London Line Extension was officially transferred to Transport for London, on November 12th. Val believes this is a significant step towards phase 1 of project being delivered by 2010. Val Shawcross AM said "The transfer of responsibility is a huge step forward and I welcome the Mayor's commitment to the project. This is great news for residents in Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays who will have more trains and new links north and south by 2010." However, there is still no indication of when phase 2, the branch to Clapham, will be built or whether the line will include stops at Brixton or Loughborough Junction. Val Shawcross AM added - " I share the concerns of many Lambeth & Southwark residents about the Clapham branch. We know its in phase 2, but we don't know when it will happen. I am lobbying TfL for a firmer announcement and also for much needed stops at Loughborough Junction and Brixton." The phase 2 Clapham branch would run through Peckham, Denmark Hill and on to Clapham, but current plans for the route include a 3km gap between Denmark Hill and Clapham High Street stations - running through, but not stopping at Loughborough Junction and Brixton stations.
