How long have you lived in Lambeth and been
a councillor here?
I grew up in Lambeth and left at 18 for University in Southampton, spending
a year in France. I came back here ten years ago and have been a Councillor
since then. I also have strong family connections with Donegal in Ireland (my
parents were immigrants to this country in the 1950's and 1960's, and to Suffolk,
where my Partner is from.
What was your first involvement in politics?
I joined the Labour Party when I was at University.
Why did you become a councillor?
Because having come from a Lambeth Council Estate and benefited from strong
family and a good education in local schools, I felt an overwhelming need to
give something back via public service. Because politics matters.
Because I think Lambeth Council is stronger when those who really understand
what it is like to have lived and grown up here get elected as Councillors.
Whilst I am nowadays a degree educated businessman, I also keep with me the
Lambeth Educated, Kid off the Council Estate, child of immigrants perspective
which gives me a roundness that I hope makes me a better Councillor.
What issues do you think are most important
to residents in your ward?
Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour. Housing. Council Tax. Anti-Social
Behaviour. Education. Traffic speeds and parking. Poverty. Innaffordable Council
Tax. Access to services and leisure facilities.
What else is involved in being a councillor
Attending meetings. Supporting important local projects. Raising the
problems of those who live in your Ward (Area) and in Larkhall that's well over
10,000 people. Raising issues of concern at the higest level of the Council
and basically, representing the interests of those people who live in your patch.
Have you ever been a victim of crime?
In the late 1980's when muggings and steamings first seemed to emerge
as phenemenon, Lambeth to me seemed much more dangerous. I was mugged quite
a few times back then. Nothing for a long time touch wood. I get very very very
angry at any crime committed, no matter how small. Politicians and the Police
are there to protect people.
What’s the worst thing about being a
councillor?
Meetingitis. Meetings for meetings sake. Meetings attended by many where
nothing gets done. On balance though, it's a privilege having the chance to
serve.
What’s the best thing about being a
councillor?
Making a difference. Having somebody thank you for the help you gave.
Knowing that you made a difference.
