TACKLING CRIME
Your local MP Tessa Jowell knows that people have a right to feel safe in their homes. Since 1997 crime is down by 30% with over three thousand extra police officers in London.
Tessa welcomed the introduction of Police Community Support Officers to Norwood and Herne Hill to help in the fight to tackle crime and anti social behaviour. Tessa is in regular contact with the Police and she would like to hear more about what you think needs to be done to tackle crime in your area.

TENANTS AND LEASHOLDERS
Tenants and Leaseholders in Norwood are facing chaos after Lambeth Council drastically
changed its housing services. Without any real consultation tenants and leaseholders
are now forced to phone a 'call centre' to report a repair or speak to a housing
officer.
Angry and frustrated tenants have told Tessa how long it now takes to get a repair sorted, let alone to find the housing officer for the area they live in. Tessa feels this is just not good enough: "Lambeth Council has to sort out the mess it has got itself into. What people want is to be able to get hold of a local housing officer or get their repairs done quickly."
Tessa wants to hear from Tenants and Leaseholders if they have been having problems with the changes in the Lambeth's housing service so that she can take them up with Lambeth Council.Tessa is committed to boosting the number of doctors and nurses working in the NHS to help deliver a faster and more convenient service for patients.
People visiting King's College Hospital are seeing the results of the massive
investment by the Government with the new Jubilee Wing and the refurbishment
of the Ruskin Wing. There has been a huge reduction in the waiting lists at
King's. In 1998 more than 4,000 people had been waiting over 6 months for their
operation. By last year, this had been reduced by 94% to just 236.

NEW MONEY FOR SCHOOLS
![]() |
Tessa joined Local MP's to lobby Government Ministers directly to secure resources for new secondary schools in the Borough. In the picture left, Tessa and neighbouring MP Keith Hill met Education Minister Stephen Twigg to make the case. In one Borough Primary School alone, children recently moved on to 26 different Secondary Schools. In Lambeth over 140 children are without a Secondary School place.
Tessa was delighted that the Government have pledged to invest £37 million
across schools in the constituency. Tessa celebrated the news with parents
(above) in West Norwood after the announcement.
In Herne Hill, Tessa has also successfully campaigned to persuade the Council to relocate the refuse depot adjacent to the proposed new Secondary School on Shakespeare Road.
WORKING FOR LOCAL PEOPLE
![]() |
Tessa has always kept closely in touch with local people, listening to their hopes, concerns and frustrations. One way that Tessa has done this has been through a series of meetings over the last year.
At these events people have given their frank views about what concerns them. If you would like to read the detailed report Tessa has written about these meetings, or if you would like to take part in a future meeting, please do contact her using the details on the back page.
SURE START
![]() |
As a parent herself, Tessa Jowell knows that the lack of affordable childcare can be a major headache for parents who often find it stressful and expensive balancing work and family responsibilities.
The Sure Start programme - which Tessa Jowell was instrumental in setting up
- will soon establish a new affordable community nursery in West Norwood.
There is always more to be done and Tessa would welcome hearing your views and
experiences on childcare and support for families.
