Lambeth Liberal Democrats Broken
Promises
You simply cannot trust Lambeth's Liberal Democrats. LambethLabour.com
has put together a report on their broken promises. Compare their Manifesto
pledges with what they've done in power since May 2002.
| 2002 Manifesto Pledge |
The
Reality |
| 1. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised“We will keep council tax as low as possible.” | 1. They increased it by 35% |
| 2. “We will consult residents on the level of Council Tax.” | 2. They consulted nobody but themselves on these huge council tax increases. |
| 3. “We will ensure there is a better and more responsive complaints system so that grievances are dealt with.” | 3. Complaint response times have not improved. In May 2002 57% of complaints were responded to within corporate target times. In June 2004 that figure was still at 57%. |
| 4. “Lambeth needs to ensure there is a real consultation with tenants on how Lambeth’s Housing is managed. “ | 4. They closed housing offices and cut back services against the wishes of tenants and leaseholders and with only a sham consultation that included council officers filling in forms on tenants behalf. |
| 5. “We will press for the Mayor of London to remove the charge for residents living in his proposed Congestion Charging Zone” | 5. Simon Hughes made no mention of removing the congestion charge for residents inside the zone during his failed mayoral campaign |
| 6. “Liberal Democrats will cut the cost of visitors permits in CPZ’s” | 6. They increased visitor parking permits by 75%. |
| 7. Lambeth Liberal Democrats said“We will consider providing [elderly] residents with a small laminated card to use behind their front doors with the telephone numbers and contacts of the utility companies clearly marked so they can challenge any callers.” | 7. They may have considered it, but no action was taken to implement this scheme. |
| 8. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised “We will provide a housing benefit service that works by sacking Capita altogether and by running the housing benefit service in house.” | 8. They closed housing offices and cut back services against the wishes of tenants and leaseholders and with only a sham consultation that included council officers filling in forms on tenants behalf. |
| 9. Lambeth Liberal Democrats said “We will give value for money by cutting waste” | 9. They wasted money on
:
|
| 10. “Put residents and users of council services first, listening to what you think is needed rather than allowing bureaucrats to decide what residents should get.” | 10. The Lambeth Opportunities Fund, which distributed £15 million of council tax payers money, did not have any external consultation whatsoever. Only Council Officers were invited to submit bids to the fund. |
| 11. “We will work to expand secondary school provision.” | 11. It took them two years to name a site for the new city academy in Brixton and when they did it was half the size of that expected by local parents. |
| 12. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised to “encourage an Increase in the provision of day centres for pensioners.” | Council officers confirm there has been no increase in the provision of day centres. |
| 13. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised they would “introduce a scheme to ensure that older homeowners can have basic repairs carried out to their homes by builders with a guaranteed reputation.” | There is no basic repair scheme. The Home Improvement Agency (HIA) does provide grants, but this is not the basic repair scheme which was promised. |
| 14. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised to “provide assistance to carers … by increasing direct payments.” | Council officers confirm that not one single carer receives more in direct payments now than they did in May 2002 |
| 15. Council officers confirm that not one single carer receives more in direct payments now than they did in May 2002 | Only elderly people receiving a care package have their homes checked and the HIA also carry out some checks on others. But there is no organised scheme for checking homes as promised. |
| 16. Lambeth Liberal Democrats promised to “Introduce a scheme of free electric blanket checks.” | No scheme has been introduced |
