Coldharbour Councillor - Sharon Malley

Councillor Sharon Malley
Councillor Sharon Malley

When and why did you first become interested in politics?
Growing up in the 80s. Margaret Thatcher and the damage she was doing to communities made me feel I had to get involved.

What inspired you to become a councillor? .
When I became active in the Labour Party in Lambeth I could see a committed group of people working together to make a difference, and I wanted to get involved.

Has it been worth it?
Yes.

What’s your greatest fear and your greatest hope?
That we don’t achieve fast enough. That we will make a real difference and deliver more equality and more opportunities.

What’s the first thing you would do if you ruled the world for a day?
Switch off all the air conditioning units and ban all urban 4X4s

What single thing would most improve your area?
Better housing

What fictional character do you identify with, and why?

CJ Craig Jed Bartlett’s press secretary in the West Wing. She has very strong convictions and is able carry people along with her.

What does your council do particularly well?
Recycling schemes.

What do you consider your greatest political triumph?
I hope it is yet to come

What is the biggest problem with local government today?
That people don’t respect it as an institution.

How would you solve it?
Councils should be devolved more powers so they can make a bigger difference in people’s lives.

Who is your political hero, and why?
Nelson Mandela. Taking South Africa from Apartheid to Democracy in the manner he did was an amazing achievement.

When and where are you most happy?
When I’m with my husband and baby at home

What one book would you take with you to a desert island?
Leo Marks “Between silk cyanide”
