Tulse Hill Councillor - Marcia Cameron

Councillor Marcia Cameron
Councillor Marcia Cameron

Marcia Cameron has been Labour Councillor for Tulse Hill since May 2006.

When and why did you first become interested in politics?
I think I first started to take a real interest when I became a school governor at Holy Trinity School in Tulse Hill some 6 years ago.

What inspired you to become a councillor?
I was doing a lot of community campaigning work and I realised that if you really want to get things done, it's better to be a decision maker rather than a decision influencer.

Has it been worth it?
So far yes. I've already resolved a number of problems for constituents of mine. I've also found that there are plenty of opportunities to effect council policy. The Labour Cabinet is very open to listening to differing opinions.

What’s your greatest fear and your greatest hope?
My greatest fear would be to have majority Conservative rule in Lambeth and a Conservative national Government. Their right-wing policies would be terrible for everyone. My greatest hope is that Labour can continue for another term in Lambeth to finish all of the work we need to do.

What’s the first thing you would do if you ruled the world for a day?
Get rid of child poverty and starvation.

What single thing would most improve your area?
More greenery - more trees, and more environmental improvements generally.

What fictional character do you identify with, and why?
Wonder Woman - because I've got to much to do!

What does your council do particularly well?
Since the local elections I believe the council is doing much better at listening to the views of local residents. The council now has a set of priorities, which reflects the priorities of local people.

What do you consider your greatest political triumph?
Taking on the role of being Lambeth Champion for the 2012 Olympics

What was your most embarrassing moment?
When Labour lost the council to the Lib Dems in 2002.

What is the biggest problem with local government today?
It's too bureaucratic.

How would you solve it?
Cut out the red tape.

Who is your political hero, and why?
Condoleeza Rice - I must emphasise that it is not her politics that I admire! She's far too right wing. But I do admire her strength of character. As a black woman, too have progressed so high up the ladder of American politics, is quite inspirational.

When and where are you most happy?
Taking a walk in the park

What’s your theme song?
Hero by Kirk Franklin

What one book would you take with you to a desert island?
The "Strength to Love" by Dr Martin Luther King. I particularly like the quote: "Power is never a good unless he be good that has it."
