Princes Councillor - Lorna Campbell

Lorna Campbell
Lorna Campbell

When and why did you first become interested in politics?
Back 1993 when I was a student I became president of the Student Union at Lambeth College. Through the various campaigning and demonstrating we did I saw how effective political action could be. I then went on to university and got more involved in the NUS. I went on from there.

What inspired you to become a councillor?
I got involved with my local Labour Party and thought about how I could make a difference. It became clear to me that local people needed someone to speak on their behalf. I realised I had some ability in this area and decided to take the plunge!

Has it been worth it?
So far it has. It’s a big learning curve but I’m glad I went for it. I’m definitely learning a lot. What really makes it worthwhile is when you get positive feedback and thanks from constituents.

What’s your greatest fear and your greatest hope?
My greatest fear is that I won’t be able to do as much as I would like to in my life. My greatest hope is that I will be able to grow as a person fulfil my potential.

What’s the first thing you would do if you ruled the world for a day?
Fix the causes of poverty, exclusion and discrimination.

What single thing would most improve your area?
Getting in more businesses and regenerating the area economically.

What fictional character do you identify with, and why?
Superman!

What’s your favourite film?
Stir Crazy. It cracks me up every time I see it.

What do you consider your greatest political triumph?
Becoming a councillor in a non-safe Labour seat.

What is the biggest problem with local government today?
Local Government doesn’t listen to residents enough. Communication with residents is generally very poor on both negative and positive issues

How would you solve it?
I would ensure councils employ innovative ways of communicating with residents and use the full potential of new technology.

Who is your political hero, and why?
Dr Martin Luther King

When and where are you most happy?
When I’m with intelligent and sociable people. Or when I’m charge!

What’s your theme song, and why?
Anything from the Sound of Music

What one book would you take with you to a desert island?
The Bible.
