When and why did you first become interested in politics?
I first got involve when I met the then local MP
John Fraser and got involved in the women’s movement in the Labour Party.
What inspired you to become a councillor?
I have lived in Lambeth for 25 years and I was
always very actively involved in the community. At one point I was helping to
set up childcare organisations. The council at the time was blocking what we
were trying to do so I became a councillor so I could change the way things
worked.
Has it been worth it?
Yes
What’s the first thing you would do
if you ruled the world for a day?
Start to tackle global warming.
What single thing would most improve your
area?
Less crime and better shops
What does your council do particularly well?
Very good nursery schools
What do you consider your greatest political
triumph?
Winning the last election overcoming a Lib Dem majority in Lambeth
What is the biggest problem with local government
today?
Bureaucracy
How would you solve it?
Very good computer systems and get staff to think about services from
the customer’s point of view.
Who is your political hero?
Nelson Mandela.
When and where are you most happy?
On Holiday with my family
What one book would you take with you to a
desert island?
A survival skills book by Ray Mears
