Knights Hill Councillor - Daniel Fitzpatrick

Dan Fitzpatrick
Dan Fitzpatrick

When and why did you first become interested in politics?
I’ve always had an interest in social issues and global community groups. I grew up in Northern Ireland and got involved in community groups who were campaigning for a peaceful resolution to the sectarian violence that was ripping it apart. When I came to live in England I got further involved in politics through my membership of the Labour Party and Amnesty International.

What inspired you to become a councillor?
As I was already involved as an active Party member and with local community groups, it seemed like a very natural progression. I thought, “Well if I’m already campaigning for the local community, why don’t I become a member of the council which takes all the key decisions?”

Has it been worth it?
Yes. Since winning the election in May, I now have a real opportunity to make a difference for my local area.

What’s your greatest fear and your greatest hope?
My greatest fear is being eaten alive by squirrels. My greatest hope (which we will achieve!) is that we will deliver all of our manifesto pledges in Lambeth

What single thing would most improve your area?
Tackling crime. It’s definitely the number one concern of local residents.

What fictional character do you identify with, and why?
Robin Hood for his egalitarian outlook on life!

What’s your favourite film?
Lawrence of Arabia

What do you consider your greatest political triumph?
Getting elected in Knights Hill ward when the Lib Dems thought they were safe.

What is the biggest problem with local government today?
Local government doesn’t have enough power in my view. I think we would all benefit if governance was more decentralised.

How would you solve it?
Decentralisation

Who is your political hero, and why?
Bill Clinton. Because he has a great way of identifying with people and bringing them together. He is also the most charismatic politician of the last the 50 years.

When and where are you most happy?
Sleeping in on Sunday morning!

What’s your theme song?
Danny Boy

What one book would you take with you to a desert island?
I Claudius
