Labour won control of Lambeth Council in May 2006, ending four years of waste and dither under a right-wing Tory-Lib Dem coalition. Labour now has 39 councillors representing areas right across Lambeth. The job of improving Lambeth started on day one, with Labour announcing that the new Council would focus on ‘delivering quality, tackling inequality’ in an ambitious bid to turn Lambeth into a council residents can be proud of.
Labour’s manifesto, called ‘We’re On Your Side’, made five key commitments that the Council has now started to deliver:
1. Your council tax kept down in line with incomes and an end to Lib Dem tax hikes
2. Your safety improved with a permanent sergeant-led police team for every ward
3. Your street bright and clean with investment to mend our broken pavements
4. Your child given the best start in life with more new secondary school places and extra activities for young people
5. Your environment greener with a major expansion of household recycling
For tenants and leaseholders living on Lambeth’s housing estates, Labour made the following commitments:
1. Repairs done on time and to the quality you expect
2. Crackdown on crime with anti-social neighbours, drug dealers and squatters evicted fast
3. Estates kept bright and clean with better lighting, improved rubbish collection and more recycling
4. Bring empty homes back into use and stop the Lib Dem housing sell-off
5. Every home safe, warm and dry with rents kept down as low as possible
Labour councillors are ambitious about improving Lambeth for all its residents. We believe the council can only improve by listening to the diverse communities it serves. Labour is standing up for the ordinary people of the Borough who are demanding more from a council that has let them down too often in the past.
